Outages  
I loved getting small snippets of time from LJ as a Paid Member when there were major outages or site problems. It showed great customer service and willingness to go an extra step. As Perm Members we already have access to all the perks. A suggestion for LJ might be to give us the occasional Virtual Gift to bestow. I have used a few and they are fun. Would not using this as an additional perk on occasion also have the benefit to LJ to publicize the Virtual Gifts?
Just an idea but I think maybe a good one for all involved......

Nice idea, but honestly...

I think it's silly they want to compansate LJ users for these few hours of paid time, when it wasn't even their fault. Especially because I didn't notice that anyone who got 'accidentially' suspended was actually getting anything for it.
Doing someone wrong knowingly (even if in good thinking) should be the real thing you say 'sorry' for.

Agreed - in this instance it was totally beyond their control. There is nothing to compensate *for*.

I think that with any website you have to expect times when the page is down or can't be accessed. As long as it's not excessive, I don't feel like I need to be given anything to make up for the time lost. But that's just me.

I think the virtual gifts are goofy but cute.

I agree-I don't feel entitled to compensation. However, the free virtual gift thing is a good idea! (I'm too cheap to pay for them!)

Well, it is difficult to do much for those of us that have permanent accounts, but that would be a nice little touch.

I know I had my time extended or free user pic or something as a result of service interruption when I was a paid member. What have they done in the past for perm members?

Disagree. I don't use virtual gifts and I honestly don't like them either. Free paid time was something useful that I could have used. I don't want to be gifted with pixels that I think are worthless.

In the past they only offered free paid time for your own account, you couldn't give it to somebody else. So as a permie that free paid time is completely useless to you.

Definitely a good idea - and LJ should love it as well, since vgifts do not actually cost them anything (as opposed to extra paid time etc). :)

I've always thought virtual gifts were just kind of well.. pointless. And I also agree with Elfy.. it's silly that they want to compensate users for something that wasn't their fault. Consider the cost of whatever they do decide to 'reimburse' is going to be more than what was lost in 'down' time.

Rather than answering everyone I'll just comment generally.

1) Great customer service means exceeding expectations. LJ seems to share this philosophy. When they screw up they try to make it right. When the problem is not their fault they still try to compensate for their customers pain. I was trying to think how they could make (many) perm members happy.

2) VGifts ARE silly. They cost nothing to LJ. If you don't want 'em, fine. I don't text, use Voice Posts, IM and I don't need 10GB of storage. I don't use most of the features available to me. This is something silly, yes, and fun to some of us.

Ooh, considering how many friends I have with Fibromyalgia, that would be really useful!

BTW, did you know that you can choose a mood image (like "sad" or "angry") and type the mood you are really trying to represent in blank box next to it? It took me too long to figure that out.

I don't think any compensation for the current outage is in order. Not for paid members, certainly not for permies.

It's was only eight hours -- what's the average uptime of LJ again? Obviously not 100%, but good luck getting a perpetual(!) contract for a host with blogging software on it, that has a 100% uptime guarantee, for USD 150.

I don't see why anyone would be compensated for 7 1/2 hours of something that was beyond their control. It's like they get punished with extra work arranging "compensation" for something that was not their fault and for such a shot time.

I don't use vgifts, don't use many usericons but would like the idea that we get recredited with hours whenever LJ has a problem as long as we get the choice to gift them to our friends.

Personally, I just wish we could all get a paintball shot on the ass of the drunk who brought down the datacenter!

I agree that it was really unnecessary for LJ to compensate everyone for the power outage, which was obviously beyond their control. But that's a really cool idea you came up with! That way us permanent users aren't left out while everyone else is getting free stuff! :P

I absolutely adore the idea! And it wouldn't necessarily cost them anything. Personally, I don't usually buy virtual gifts so it'd be an extra treat for me and users like me to be able to give them anyway! :D

I think it's a nice idea.
It doesn't cost Lj anything and a nice gesture when they compensate paid users.
Afterall we are their most loyal customers.
