Farewell Brad
SixApart isn't advertising this yet so here it is, Brad Fitzpatrick has resigned. Without Brad, this site never would have come to fruition and I'm sure we are all grateful for his contributions.

In his own words: http://brad.livejournal.com/2334177.html

i see that he hasnt been involved with the current debacle, but still...i feel a bit more scared with him being gone. he wasnt perfect of course, but i feel like he looked out for the users a hell of a lot more than what we've got now.

i'm trying to be positive - i mean obviously i am going to be at lj no matter what because i invested the money all those years ago...i just hope i won't eventually regret it.

in either case, so long brad! thank you for all your hard work.

it's probably time to distance myself from it and move on

Distance himself from the recent shitstorms, he means. I don't blame him. Don't need to bring that controversy to whatever he does next. Good luck to him in whatever that may be.

OT, but...
Mets icon FTW. Endy's the best. LGM!

Even though I knew he wasn't really involved any more, I am a little sad to see this. Even though I don't know Brad at all personally or in any way, but he felt like a bit like a benevolent grandfather, kind of like he would swoop in and rescue us when our parents were fighting or refusing to let us stay up late. Know what I mean? Anyway, I sincerely hope he enjoys whatever he is doing now.

Benevolent grandfather? Isn't he, like, 22?

:)

Who could blame him?

Good luck in all you do, Brad.

whoa... that's ... weird.

He's truly one of the good guys--his contributions to open source have been tremendous. That livejournal was included in all this (and used as a testing platform) just goes to show how forward thinking he was (or became). I'm sad to see him go, although not terribly surprised since he hasn't been publicly communicating on recent issues. If he's headed to Google, I'm sure he'll go on to do greater things.

You said that so well. Thank you.

I much prefer the ValleyWag article; I think it captured the essence of the situation at 6A right about now.
yndyyndy on August 7th, 2007 02:38 am (UTC)
seconded - but he had to be diplomatic
Jilliantastee on August 7th, 2007 02:22 am (UTC)
best of luck to him. can't wait to hear what is in the future.

Brad will land on his feet - he's talented, smart, and innovative...
It's us I worry about.

Not that he's been terribly involved day-to-day since the sale, but it's sort of the 'well, the old guard is leaving... why exactly are we staying again?' kind of thing.

Exactly. [sigh]

Makes me wish I had enough money to buy 6A (or just LJ, if they're only trying to sell off LJ). Of course, that kind of money would be nice to have anyway.

With the money I've invested in perm accounts, I'll be staying, but I'm aware I may have to move my fannish pursuits elsewhere. Sad.

One of the things I plan to do, if I ever win the lottery, is to buy 6A. Then I could run things as I saw fit. :x

Note to self: Start playing the lottery.

I've been here for so long, I doubt I'll go anywhere, even if all of my friends do a mass exodus elsewhere. Three-quarters of my internet life is recorded here in this journal. Pack up and move? Fuck that shit.

Good on Brad for finally being able to get out, though. I'd heard somewhere that he wasn't really doing much at 6A, so better for all for him to move on. I'm hoping his next project turns out as awesome as LJ did under his direction. (And I think LJ is still pretty awesome, even though some communication and ideas are kinda wonky. No drama is worth putting down the service over.)

It is sad that Brad's leaving, but just maybe he is really wanting to get into another project. I think this recent problem won't last too long. If LJ has to put the rules down once and for all I think LJ will survive any exodus and even get more new members will take their place. What will be sad is that it will never be the same. But possibly it can be better?

I think we will be seeing this subject more and more and not just Live Journal but the whole internet.

So they have not addressed it yet?
Artelaartela on August 7th, 2007 06:46 am (UTC)
I note with sadness that one of the reasons that Brad is going is because so many people were writing to him about the "child porn" thing:

The flood of personal emails to me about this is a big part of the reason I realized that after 9 years, I need to find something else to do.

:-(

I'll be sad to see him go - I got my permie account while he was still in charge - had I know that it was all about to get sold off to 6A I probably wouldn't have bought the permie account.
