woot!! free is good!
Well finally...

Every time LJ goes down, the "paid" users get credit or time... but the "permanent" accounts are pretty much S.O.L. since it's tough to add 3 days on to forever...
Last time it happened, I suggested in the news thread that maybe a free v-gift or two would be the way to go for perm accounts.

Well, now they're giving all paid (and perm!) users 1 free v-gift... so I consider myself recompensed for the recent downtime.  And I'm perfectly okay with the benefit going to non-perm paid members too - because it increases the odds I might get one! heh.

Details from the news post:

Paid members can send a free v-gift

We're celebrating all the new gifts by giving each Paid member a $1 coupon to spend on a v-gift for a friend. Just choose your v-gift in the gift shop and then look for the dropdown menu under the "Have a gift certificate?" section at the bottom of the page. Select your $1 coupon and click the "Use" button next to it, then hit the "check out" button to send your free v-gift.

That is exactly what I thought ;-p

The free V-gift for perm members was suggested by someone in this community, I think.

Indeedy. mehitabelmmoss brought it up here, with a very polarizing discussion to follow in the comments. (No one really seemed "meh" on the idea...they either loved it or the hated it.)
Mehitabel Moody Moss: Mr. Bubblemehitabelmmoss on August 17th, 2007 03:11 am (UTC)
That was me! I guess someone pays attention. And it was a rousing discussion.
Now as to whom to gift w/ mine.........

I'll meh on it. I don't think much of the rather ugly v-gifts, and have no desire to get or give one, as I spend almost 'never' looking at profiles, and I'm probably not the only one out there.

Actually, giving us extra time credit that we may gift to someone else might be nice.

Probably because the 'meh' people were so 'meh' that they did not bother to reply... ;-p
yndyyndy on August 17th, 2007 03:47 am (UTC)
I brought it up over in news in the last down thread...
I guess a lot of us have similar ideas.

They've also started to have commercially sponsored themes and vgifts, so that hey, now paid and permanent members will start to see advertising. Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy about LJ?
Laura McEwanlauramcewan on August 17th, 2007 02:52 am (UTC)
Yeah, that.
All the Colours of the Merainbow on August 17th, 2007 03:02 am (UTC)
i view everything using style=mine and don't really look at vgifts except my own, so i'm not too leery yet.

for me a pepsi theme doesn't sound any worse than a personalized theme of screaming yellow with tiny lime green text and huge animated graphics.
Alicia 'Xellandria' Kilpatrickxella on August 17th, 2007 04:48 am (UTC)
While I'm not thrilled with the idea of pepsi advertising everywhere, I would much rather see pepsi themes than the aforementioned screaming yellow/lime green/godawful webdesign that always makes me think of Geocities.

From the news post linked above:
"(Paid users won't see the sponsored copy attached to the gifts.)"
So no ads for us, still.
yndyyndy on August 17th, 2007 03:48 am (UTC)
unless you consider having a giant pepsi can from a "friend" showing on your profile an ad...
The Water Seeker: redbullplymouth on August 17th, 2007 05:00 am (UTC)
anyone who gives me a pepsi can is clearly NOT my friend! Not because I have a problem with advertising but because, ew, gross, pepsi ;)
yndyyndy on August 17th, 2007 06:43 am (UTC)
seconded...

I'm waiting for the firestorm of "how do I get this stupid pepsi can not to show on my profile page?!?!" posts.
surrey_suckssurrey_sucks on August 17th, 2007 05:30 pm (UTC)
I agree that Pepsi is gross!
mokiemokie on August 20th, 2007 07:52 am (UTC)
They lie. I got a Pepsi-sponsored vgift from someone I don't know, and there is adspeak attached--though whether it's attached to the vgift automatically or the account is just an advertiser spamming random users, I don't know.

"Suggests" and "shown pretty conclusively" aren't quite the same thing. Besides, I've been drinking fizzy drinks almost non-stop for the last five years and I still weigh more or less the same (I've actually gone down a bit this last year).

Also, eating cake promotes weight gain so I guess those are out. And the cookies and Oreos, the lollipop, the box of chocolate, …

haha, I didn't even have to read the deleted comment you replied to and I know what they must have said..
yndyyndy on August 17th, 2007 03:48 am (UTC)
ugh no... especially as I HATE Pepsi!!

If they're going to do that - they need to let us have the option to disable the Ad-spam-gift from showing on our profiles.
sigh
Laura McEwanlauramcewan on August 17th, 2007 02:52 am (UTC)
Anyone else feel like they're being "bought" with this?

Don't get me wrong, it's actually a cute idea. But with everything else going on...it's like "Whee, distract!" IMO.
grahamsgrahams on August 17th, 2007 03:00 am (UTC)
I'd say the majority of LJ users don't even know or care about "everything else is going on".
Laura McEwanlauramcewan on August 17th, 2007 03:02 am (UTC)
And that's sad.
grahamsgrahams on August 17th, 2007 03:23 am (UTC)

What I find interesting is to read the comments. Even when LJ tries, it can't seem to please certain folks. It's almost fun to watch :-)
Wad of Cool: blue scrubsthe_dibbler on August 17th, 2007 03:48 am (UTC)
That was fun, I just virtual gifted a bunch of my friends list seeing as I had gift certificates I was unaware of as well.

I thought it was nice on LJ's part. I think the V-Gifts are cute.

you should get two!
iRambleredatt on August 17th, 2007 09:09 am (UTC)
Yay, free stuff!

(Except for the free sponsored gifts. Eeew.)

If you still think LJ should compensate Perm Users with a free gift every time they compensate Paid Users with paid, then it's probably not too late to add your +1 to the suggestions post :~)
The Enemy of the Goodeideteker on August 17th, 2007 10:29 am (UTC)
I hear they'll be giving out free trepannings next! Yay!

And this has nothing to do with the downtime. So... we still got nothing. I think the message from Six-Depart is pretty clear.
DaveGdigitalranger on August 17th, 2007 11:06 am (UTC)
So, lets all hope LJ goes down again real soon, lol.
Charmanderpokecharm on August 17th, 2007 12:03 pm (UTC)
they didn't seem to make the distinction between paid and perm in their post...would be nice if they had ;)
so_sharlemaine on August 17th, 2007 12:53 pm (UTC)
Lmao....the whole concept is so riduculously cheesy and jr high. Let's get Justin Timberlake stickers and put them on our notebooks too.

Better than nothing.

And I had a $4 gift certificate waiting for me as well that I wasn't aware of. Where'd that comem from?
Sir Caliban: OMGsircaliban on August 17th, 2007 07:58 pm (UTC)
Ok..

This just amazes me.. I really have no interest in giving or receiving v-gifts and to have stuff people give me clutter my profile. I want to be able to control what shows up on my own profile. (this includes v-gifts)

That being said.. I am completely baffled as to why anyone would send a pepsi-max v-gift.. or use a pepsi mood theme.. or a pepsi theme. Some people would argue that it's 'free'.. but I don't get it. If pepsi wants to pay me to do it.. that's one thing.. give me free soda.. or coupons for their products.. But I think it's pretty obnoxious for someone to send me a 'free' pepsi can virtual gift. (saying that.. I'll probably get a dozen)

I went to myspace's home page today and it had 'coke' ads all over it.. fun stuff.. I tell you.

I got annoyed with the pepsi-max sponsorship of v-gifts..themes and moods.. but the person in the news article posts a question about a 'brain-in-a-jar' v-gift and everyone goes hog-wild over it.
Nat S Fordnatf on August 19th, 2007 10:58 am (UTC)
Virtual gifts are not really of any use/interest to me (although receiving one is always nice) - I would prefer an extra userpic or two - or at least the choice of a userpic or a virtual gift...
Nat S Fordnatf on September 3rd, 2007 01:28 am (UTC)
and then look for the dropdown menu under the "Have a gift certificate?" section at the bottom of the page. Select your $1 coupon and click the "Use" button next to it,

There is no such dropdown on that page. :(
