Good News from News
For anyone who hasn't seen it, for once news has something useful to say - paid and permanent users can now switch off the receipt of virtual gifts, with an option to switch off just the sponsored ones or all of them. This is controlled from the Viewing Options panel on the user information page. Ironically news still hasn't done this and is still displaying rather a lot of pepsi cans...

What I don't know is what happens if someone tries to send someone a paid vgift after they've switched them off. Hopefully the system checks before taking cash, but it'd be a bit of a rip-off if they just vanished into limbo.

Later - tried it from another account, you get an error message before the money is taken.

It stops you from getting additional vgifts, it doesn't stop it from displaying ones you've already received.

You'll just have to click and remove them one time, after that they're gone.

To me the most interesting thing right now is whether they'll take those virtual gifts off the news info page.

If they delete them they're basically admit that that was a bad idea and if they leave them, they've got an info page full of abuse on a comm that most new or potential customers visit first. ... I wish somebody ran a betting pool on lj behavior.

Do they really need to delete them when they only last for a couple of weeks anyway?
4th Sector Pathfinderpernickety on August 29th, 2007 11:24 am (UTC)
No, they don't of course. I went off on a bit of a tangent there for my personal amusement. :)

Oh well, fairy snuff then.

Hope it served its purpose. <g>

Oh well, fairy snuff then.

I'll have to steal this expression from you, if you don't mind, because it is delightful. :)

Hehe. Steal away. I stealed it off an old flame for much the same reason. :)

It appears to default to disabling sponsored gifts only, which is handy.

Something I did notice when making sure that I wouldn't be bombarded with pepsi cans in the future, though... Dystopia is apparently no longer a valid viewing option :( When did that happen?

I'm terrified that going to the page and seeing that has now reverted my account to one of the "newer" styles that I absolutely loathe, though I seem to be safe for now *phew*

It is, only it's not one they show you on that page by default. I forget the magic incantation you have to use to get it to appear on the page so you can select it. (Or you can fiddle with your cookies, which I think is the only way to get e.g. Bluewhite, Woais, or Opalcat as your default site scheme.)

Magic incantation (I've got it saved on my top-level backdated post for if I ever need it under a different account ;)).

That's cool, but how do you get bluewhite or any of the older schemes?
子rin - An faigh7rin on August 29th, 2007 12:24 pm (UTC)
Ummm... pass. Sorry.

*sits and waits for someone more knowledgeable on the issue than I am to appear*

Gosh am I the only oldtimer who actually LIKES the horizon theme? I've lived through at least 4 themes and actually thought this was a HUGE improvement over the past themes.

Now if only they'd let me display it in red and black instead of blue and white... white backgrounds hurt my eyes :P
Jesso: Blanksyntheticjesso on August 30th, 2007 12:14 am (UTC)
WORD. I heart darker backgrounds. White is evil.

I don't see anything about it in the news community? And maybe I'm missing something, but what's the big deal? Are people being spammed with commercial "gifts"?
Marcus L. Rowlandffutures on August 29th, 2007 12:39 pm (UTC)
news certainly is - take a look at their user page...
Esprixesprix on August 29th, 2007 01:14 pm (UTC)
Some folks feel the sponsored vgifts are imposing commercials when paid/perm members pay for the privilege of not having to see any commercials at all. Other folks simply detest vgifts as a whole (with a passion, evidently).

Personally I made sure my settings were to accept them all, 'cause I don't have a problem getting them.
Spring Nights Forevertallblue on August 29th, 2007 11:23 pm (UTC)
I am happy they are working on giving users choices. I myself like V-gifts, to me they are sort of like E-cards. I do not like soda of any kind, so I would not want the Pepsi or any other kind of soda, but who knows what will come around the bed and I won't be disabling V-gifts or Sponsored V-gifs.

It comes down on who the sponsor is and what the picture of the gift is.

I been thinking about it... and what we could really use, as a tangible credit when credit is offered, is something like More Subgroups. I ran out long ago at the 30 limit.
