LJ Censorship
Did you know that LiveJournal is now filtering your search results, and prohibiting searches for certain terms?

Among the interests which are apparently now verboten are: Rollercoaster Tycoon, raccoons, firecrackers, allspice, pachinko, suspicious, doo-wop, Dagoba, Snakes on a motherfucking plane, Prussian blue, Spice Girls, family morals, genocide....

If you try to search for any of these interests, you get "Sorry, we're unable to help you find users matching the interests you've provided."

Interestingly, if you search for "murdering and eating babies", you get "There are no communities interested in "murdering and eating babies." You can create one!"

but i can do search by those terms with no problem and see the results
Tim: Delusions of effictivenessspodlife on January 30th, 2008 09:15 pm (UTC)
This is old news and the problem has been fixed.

Is the original poster still pissed off now their post has appeared two months later?

Hein: WTF!?fub on January 30th, 2008 08:26 pm (UTC)
I just added 'badwrongdirtydaddy!pr0n' to my interests. Because I (still) can.

Using automatic stemming stuff for content filtering is stupid. Anyone who did any sort of research on it knows that.
The Tower of the Otherworldcaersidi on January 30th, 2008 08:27 pm (UTC)
I can see this is old post but a lot of these interests are now searchable again.

If this is an old post (by the date), I wonder why it is only showing up now on my flist?

Yeah, I originally posted this two months ago and the post has only just now been approved by the moderators. Makes me wonder just how many other backlogged posts there are.

A lot of the search terms are still blocked, like "family morals", "Dagoba", "snakes on a motherfucking plane", "pachinko", "genocide" and "Prussian blue"
David Brailsford (MBA): idiotshdofu on January 30th, 2008 08:39 pm (UTC)
yeah why do we need moderated posting here? I mean have we had permenant members who were trolls trolling here or something?
Nikki: NH Eclipsenakeisha on January 31st, 2008 10:05 am (UTC)
Good point.

I didn't even realise it was moderated - I must have missed that bit of information.

This LJ censorship self-policing of 'controversial content' has to have guidelines in place mandating these 'restrictions' and make them public to the journal members. Why, exactly, is 'family morals' now an unsearchable interest? Provide us with the rationale for these decisions!
Captain Packrat: Homer's Braincaptpackrat on January 30th, 2008 08:36 pm (UTC)
"Family morals" contains the words "family" and "oral".

I really wish LJ would do some sort of spinoff for kids under 18 and get them out of here instead of all these stupid new systems and regulations. I joined lj to express myself, not to come up with 50 new ways to be paranoid

"There are no communities interested in "murdering and eating babies."

It's the loss of such essential skills that are leading the world down the path to ruin.
Marcus L. Rowland: Tooth and Claw 2ffutures on January 30th, 2008 10:21 pm (UTC)
Funnily enough I'm currently writing an RPG about dragons whose customs do indeed include eating their own babies - for excellent evolutionary reasons, as it happens. Their human neighbours are not amused, especially if one of them makes a remark about a baby looking "good enough to eat."

Oh I'm sure there are communities interested in "murdering and eating babies" - they just call it "human veal tenderizing and preparation" ;)

Idiots. Many non-racist non-pornographic legit terms are still filtered.

Not that I personally would have noticed for a while, since I personally rarely do an "interests" search, but for other people this must be a real irritant. Clearly some crude hack-job filtering program was allowed to be run without thorough and exhaustive testing first, and there should be a way to turn the filters OFF; we don't need "Big Brother" to "police" us.
Spring Nights Forevertallblue on January 31st, 2008 02:53 am (UTC)
I think these interest filters have to do with the purchase deal and contracts and they won't comment on it. It also makes it harder on the WFI's of the world. Funny thing is the the non English do not have interest filters.

I think that there is nothing "we" can say or do. I really believe that if my wishes and wants do not coincide with Live Journal Inc. then there is nothing that can be done. I really personally feel that they do not care about perm members. And if I am really that disappointed the only thing I can do is leave if it gets to the point where it is no longer fun.

I am learning to multi journal and try out other sites. And I am having fun with it.
ファビュラス マックスjai_dit on January 31st, 2008 08:23 am (UTC)
They've been around since before the purchase deal (well, before it was announced, anyway). I forget how many months, but it's been a long time. I think summer, at least.
Spring Nights Forevertallblue on January 31st, 2008 08:33 am (UTC)
They had a contract to run the Cyrillic side of LJ for 12 months. I believe that this was a "test" period and that after 12 months they would be able to purchase LJ if all their conditions were met. One condition for this final purchase has something to do with not publicly speaking about certain things, one of them is the interest search filters.

If you want to check things out about when SUP first came into the picture you can check no_lj_ads there are a few members that are Russian and customers of SUP during the 12 month contract.
ファビュラス マックスjai_dit on January 31st, 2008 08:37 am (UTC)
That sounds kind of conspiracy-theory to me, to be honest. I don't really know all the details of the SUP agreement (and anyone who does is NDAed and can't share) :P so really all of this is pure speculation.

I did know about the deal they had to provide services to the Russian side of LJ, but if you want me to believe what you're claiming you're going to have to give me a lot more evidence than just saying "here, check out this community, we have russians who've been around a while".
Spring Nights Forevertallblue on January 31st, 2008 07:10 pm (UTC)
It is very common to have contracts and non disclosures to the public. Six Apart is the ones who put the interest filter on and even Live Journal Inc admitted that. But they also said they cannot comment on why or bring it up anymore. Marta said that.

Known facts : SUP has run LJ's cyrillic side for 12 months through a licensing agreement. Google SUP buy Live Journal and you will read it over and over.
SUP has now bought LJ and there are things they cannot comment after the business deal was concluded.

SUP admits that the interest blocks were put in place by Six Apart. and they cannot comment further nor will they.

The blocked search terms are not related to the recent purchase of LiveJournal and were made earlier this year, as stated above

We will continue to review the blocked terms and update or remove them as necessary; however, we will not be posting updates when we do so.

We are reviewing the system for a different solution to the problem, but will likely not announce or comment on any changes

http://community.livejournal.com/lj_policy/1369.html

I have no clue as in why you think it sounds like a conspiracy-theory. I really am not interested in "convincing" you of anything. My comments are not leaning towards slamming LJ. It is more like business is business type opinion.

And yes it is speculation, maybe I should have stated that.

...pachinko? Ah...I suppose because it contains "chink". Oh for goodness sakes, I'm asian and I'd never try to make LJ ban searches for "chink", that's just silly.

Oh, and PS...if any modly-types would like help with the queue for this community, I'd be glad to volunteer my services. :) I'm finishing my graduate degree online, so I spend an ungodly amount of time at my computer these days...

Alright, help me out here. Doo Wop? I seriously don't get it. Like the music? What? Like Dion and the Belmonts? I LIKE Dion and the Belmonts!

I am positive that something has gone so far over my head. Anyone?
Captain Packrat: Professor Frinkcaptpackrat on January 31st, 2008 05:52 am (UTC)
"wop" is apparently an ethnic slur for Italians.
