The LJ Advisory Board Elections: Yay or Nay?
So what did everyone here think of these LJ Advisory Board Elections that just happened?
(I suppose I should have asked while this was going on!)

Totally cool, totally un-cool, or just "Meh?"

LJ Election community: lj_election_en

Also there have been Policy Changes, so the Terms of Service were changed around. LJ policy details: lj_policy
Again, yay, nay, or "Meh?"
It looks like they went back on some of the things that were put into place after the great Strikethrough massacre of 2007.

I feel better about the policy changes than I do about the election.

are you surprised?
the election was a sham.

and those policy changes were pretty sneaky ...

I thought the election was full of wank, but I think the results are legitimate and I am happy with the person who was elected. The policy changes? <3333333. So much <333.

I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off and did not follow the elections or the policy change. Can anyone summarize the changes in a nutshell? Pretty please?
John :: Affirming Consequents, Denying Antecedentsidonotlikepeas on June 2nd, 2008 02:55 am (UTC)
Policy changes:

1) Breastfeeding icons are allowed.
2) "Bandwidth theft" is no longer LJ's problem.
3) "Hate Speech" includes people saying "kill all queers". It does not include people who are joking (although of course saying "ha ha I'm joking" at the end of a racist screed doesn't magically sanctify the whole thing).
4) Images of Harry and Snape getting into each others' business are no longer against the ToS.

Election:

1) legomymalfoy is the English-speaking user representative to the LJ advisory board because more people who use LJ voted for her than voted for anyone else.
2. Many of the other candidates and their supporters are having trouble wrapping their heads around that fact.

My favorite part has been watching the butthurt trolls be all emo in the aftermath. My least favorite part was the hypocrisies displayed by the supporters of both forerunners.

But, outside of the schadenfreude, too much wank and I've never felt so UNidentified with the vocal majority on this site before, even with all the other little dramas in the past 6 years.

Policy changes actually surprised me with their sanity. I'm glad I'm a permmember so I can wander away from this site in general disgust for awhile and not have to give up all my features.

I've made a lot of other comments about the election in actual election threads, so I'm just summing up here.

I'm just glad that jameth didn't win. Considering how obnoxious he behaved during the elections and how childish he behaved after it was done, I'm just glad as hell, that he won't be representing us on the advisory board.

When I cast my vote, I didn't know any backstory on any candidate, and voted solely on the statements that were linked from the election page. Everyone for whom I voted did horribly, but that by itself is just fine. What disappointed me is that jameth came so close to winning without appearing to have a serious platform. I get the impression that he is highly popular from Encyclopedia Dramatica and other sites, and got lots of votes from this. (Or maybe it was some sort of massive sock puppet thing?) Anyway, what this says about the LJ userbase is disappointing to me. Everyone whines about every change, but then votes for someone who's in it for the lawls, or what have you. Also, there was another candidate who did well whose campaign page featured a scantily clad woman... no.

I'm not trying to get all argumentative here... just someone please clue me in if I'm missing something.

I am happy about the policy changes. It is nice to see the users being treated with respect, like you know customers.

The election seemed fine, but the internet fights were silly and embarrassing.
Tree of Geeksscaree on June 2nd, 2008 07:51 am (UTC)
I'm not sure why I bothered to vote, actually. I agree with you, the election itself was ok, it was just all the accompanying twaddle that irritated.

I thought maybe that was just because I'm English and we usually ignore the ranigazoo and just vote for the person whose paperwork is neatest (or something like that).

I'm still not convinced the advisory board will do anything useful, but I was convinced to vote afterall since there was someone I very much wanted to vote AGAINST because he would be worse than useless. So I did. With only one of my accounts thankyouverymuch! And he lost so yay.

It's not gona do shit. You know it's not gona do shit. Even the title itself, "ADVISORY board" is just that - giving advice. You never have to listen to advice. Even if it is smrtness to do so.

Sorry, no time to read comments before posting this. Please pardon any duplication.

I'm with you on the policy changes vs. the election. I thought they were sensible, for the most part, and I was grateful for the clarity of and reasoning behind them.

As for the election, I thought it was shoddily run, in that there were too many holes in the system, and I was none too happy with several of the campaigns (especially that of the second-place candidate) or the appalling tone set by a number of the more vocal candidates. The person for whom I voted came in third, and was infinitely less strident and more reasoned than several of the others. That tells me something, and gives me a little hope for the future.

For next time, I think there need to be some changes.

  • I'd like to see a system that pegs it to one person per ballot/poll response/however they do it, rather than one email or IP address.
  • I'd like to see some rules for campaigning that would eliminate any threats of violence or even the intimation of such by any LJ user toward any of the candidates. In theory, this should be covered under the policy changes as a general rule of LJ behavior anyway, but I have serious doubts that that would be enough to prevent such behavior in a future election. (Of course, a specific warning might not be, either.)
  • I'd like to see the LJ staff and volunteers specifically instructed to deal correctly with all LJ support requests that have anything to do with these elections, no matter how silly or crass they may think them to be. (Personally, I don't like, agree with or support as acceptable the 'new interest' that certain people have created about this, but if I'd been a volunteer or staff member dealing with those support requests, I'd have handled them the way all such requests are supposed to be handled.)

Regarding that last point, I think that it might be a decent policy change to forbid creating a linkable interest that simply states that a fellow LJ user is a [insert obscenity]. It's incendiary and borders on hate speech, under these circumstances.

Finally, I've got some serious reservations about the person who won, though I have many more about those I've seen protesting her win. We'll see how she manages, though, assuming that nothing happens (or has happened) in the interim.

All this vitriol over a position that's likely to be ignored by the PTB at SUP/LJInc. *shakes head* Bad job.

Election was a win for me, whatever. If rm (my first choice) had won, we'd have had an adult representing us on the (probably toothless) advisory board— possibly worthwhile; if jameth had won, the management and crotchety users would have had to put up with his trollishness, probably leading to much amusing drama; when legomymalfoy won, the users and managers who've gotten pantbunched about fandom ended up with a fanfic writer who lists Harry/Snape in her interests. And because the advisory committee is so unlikely to wield any real power, it was all of minimal real-world importance anyway. How could I not be delighted at the entertainment this has provided for me? This why I love LJ!
Schneelockeschnee on June 2nd, 2008 08:01 am (UTC)
The election wasn't handled the best way it could've been really, but frankly, I'm not sure it means all that much, either.

The policy changes seem like a good start, for the most part - the only thing that's bothering me is the part about breastfeeding userpics. But there's always Adblock, so it's not a huge deal.

Noone I voted for won, by one of them made it almost to the finish line. I didn't vote for lego because I couldn't read the full journal and didn't feel I had enough info to make a call, but I will try to support them and hope they will be a good rep for us.

The elections were amusing.

The fact that one side is blaming the other for cheating amuses me.

If one of the candidates friends were doing it, you know the other candidates friends were to. It's just one candidates friends cheated better.
Shandrew: hockeyshandrew on June 3rd, 2008 03:34 am (UTC)
Elections were a farce.

The number of people voting versus LJ accounts was very small.

The number of fake/spam accounts on LJ is very large. I used to flag these (usually after a fake/spam LJ account would friend me), and then i'd check again a few weeks later and they would not get deleted. Now i see they've removed the "flag this journal" link completely, but i suppose that's better than one that no one actually looks at.

Does the election being a farce matter? Not much. The advisory board already has pretty much the BEST POSSIBLE people you could have on the advisory board of a blog company, in Lessig and Dyson. These two are brilliant, excellent leaders, and excellent speakers. Brad and danah are great, of course. I only wish these four were a board of directors for LJ, not the advisory-board-that-we-don't-really-take-advice-from-for-important-decisions.
