Preview the new notification system

Starting today, Permanent account holders have access to a sneak preview of LJ's upcoming notifications system. You can set up notifications for all types of things, including when someone adds you as a friend, one of your friends uploads a new userpic, etc. You can also use the

icon to track updates and changes within journals and communities, such as all the comments to an entry or to a specific comment thread. Just check in to your Message Center to keep up to date on the LJ activity that's most important to you.

This sneak preview is currently only for Permanent account holders, but the notifications system will be launching to all LJ users in the next few weeks. Visit the FAQ to find out the different limits and options for each account level.

Please feel free to spread the word to other Permanent account holders you know. The engineers are still working out bugs in this complex system, but if you find something you think we should know about please leave your feedback on this post in

lj_releases.

Privacy...

Will this notify you of posts that you can't see? If so, is that by design?

Nope, it respects security settings on entries and on comments -- the general logic behind this is that it's not letting you see anything that you can't already see or find out for yourself.

You can see notification in Message Center (by default). For recieve notification to email you must check «Email» when subscribe or in «Manage message settings»

Yes. You can subscribe to any journal or community.

Excellent! I thought I was seeing things when that little thumbtack icon suddenly appeared today. I thought I'd missed something. But now I definitely have to try this out.

It would be quite good, if we can pop-up for make subscription. For now ESN used opened page and after subscription user returned to previous page. But would be better if pop-up opened after clicking «Track» and closed after subscription.

new window? i don't like that idea.

have you seen the little menu that appears when you use AJAX to delete a comment? now that i can go with, and have it fall back onto going to the other page, just like the AJAX deletion does.

if i want to open something in a new window/tab, i'll do it myself.

I saw that push pin and thought I was going insane. It's a neat feature, but when no one I was chatting with in YIM could see it, they all thought I was mental.

Great idea for a feature, but since enabling it I'm not receiving any more 'normal' email comment notifications to my own posts or to comments I make elsewhere. Please don't tell me that enabling this overrides that setting and I have to 'watch' everything I reply to... :-\

A few of the replies to my post show up as those responders as not having been logged in, although when I check my journal, they were. Not a case of deleted replies either.

Huh, that's strange. Next time this happens, don't delete the notifications -- let me know (either by commenting here or by emailing directly, burr86@lj) and I'll look into it further, so we figure out exactly what's going on and fix it. Thanks!

Nice feature - grammar needs some work, though as "Notify me when... new posts in Xs journal" isn't exactly a sentence.
