Mod: Six-Month Update
For the prospective members who request membership in the community...

This community has membership restricted to permanent account holders only. If you have a Basic, Plus, or Paid account, your membership request will not be approved. You're certainly welcome to read the public posts, and even interact in the community. But the community was created specifically for permanent account holders; for further details on that, I direct you to the links on this community's userinfo page. The moderators do check your info page, incidentally, so chances are you won't slip through the cracks. ;-)

You may wish to view the previous entry for links for this next part, but feel free to send people to that entry so they're aware of ESN. And please do test it out and have fun with it. ESN is a cool feature and destined to become cooler after the foundation has been checked thoroughly; your input helps in that process, so after you test it out a bit swing by lj_releases and provide some feedback, yeah?

Since our community was mentioned in lj_releases membership has jumped drastically. I would guess around 100 additional people have joined our ranks in the few hours since it has been posted. And few had to wait long, as qfemale processed those requests in an impressively expedient manner (a round of applause for her!). She's asleep right now -- or should be. I have processed some requests since then, and I know kittygopounce is trying to handle the requests as they trickle in at a steady stream. Along with kunzite1, they help keep this place running smoothly. If I haven't yet thanked you guys, thank you very much for what you've done to help with this community, and for volunteering the time you have to do this. I really do appreciate that.

On that note, we've had a few entries where applicability to this community's stated purpose has been questioned or outright challenged. I won't re-hash what I've said before, because I don't wish to sound like a nag. With the increased membership, this may potentially be a recurring issue. So from this point, posts will be moderated. No one is losing posting access -- each and every one of you can still post. There will just be an additional step in that process so we can maintain the quality. If you've read posts or comments I've made before, you'll know my interpretation is pretty liberal, provided one can tie the issue into one other stated purposes.

There are four of us moderating this community, and as quick as membership requests tend to be processed, I have little worry that there will be significant delay in your post being approved. Please do feel free to continue posting. And ideally, spread the word about this community -- more members make for more varied, interesting, and valuable input. I enjoy and appreciate the interaction that has occurred within this community thus far. And I look forward to hearing what each of you have to say in the future. :-)

This community is a few days away from being six months old (already!) with almost 500 members (already!?). Many thanks to existing members for their involvement in this community, and a hearty welcome to our newest members. As always, new members please check-out what I like to call a meet-and-greet. Feel free to post about yourself. And, again, as always, for those who've been around a little bit, feel free to check-out what the fresh meat has to say in said post.

Lastly, while I hate to cover unrelated topics in one post...if anyone is interested in designing a layout for this community, please feel free to contact me by e-mail or in comments. For this community, I'd like something clean, simple (to read and navigate), professional, and reasonably unique. If you think you have what it takes to make a great layout that reflects the great member-base and stands a cut above the average layout, I'd love to hear from you. It does not have to be anything ridiculously fancy, and can certainly be based on existing layouts. But while I chose the existing layout to mimic paidmembers, I think it's time for something that sets us apart (above?) the crowd. And I'm not great at layouts, alas.

OK, I don't want to talk your collective ears off. I'm done. :)

Trying? It's fine at the moment - steady streem and no stress to deal with ;) I'm just lucky in that my side of the world just happens to be asleep when the majority of applications seem to come through :P

my side of the world was asleep too... just not me ;-p
It's good that I don't have to be anywhere today!

And besides, Hello ;-) I don't think I've bet you before.
kittygopounce: up to no goodkittygopounce on August 11th, 2006 12:37 pm (UTC)
lol, I was asleep :X It's definitely easier with all-nighter's if the next day can be devoted to recovering.

Hi right back! :) Nice to meet you.

Absolutely! I wouldn't be doing that if I had to get up the other day... sleep is too nice ;-p

Looks like you use Sema too? ;-p
kittygopouncekittygopounce on August 12th, 2006 12:01 am (UTC)
Mmmmm, sleep.

I do :)
qfemaleqfemale on August 19th, 2006 02:57 pm (UTC)
I love it! (Sema)
I just wish ScrapBook option would be integrated a little more. How about you?
kittygopounce: no cluekittygopounce on August 19th, 2006 03:06 pm (UTC)
Meh, I use it for the basic function of updating my lj :X because mostly because I'm at work these days. Although I've started to do it through the site again since dling random programs onto a work machine is not really the go. I haven't used it for scrapbook, actually.

I see!
I am way to paranoid to log into my account from any other computer but my own or my bf's...
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 13th, 2006 08:58 pm (UTC)
Trying, yes. Because I know work takes priorirty for you and you wouldn't sham on the job to play around on LJ, no? ;)

Dude. Absolutely not ;)
Miss Jeckamissjecka on August 11th, 2006 03:20 pm (UTC)
I'd be interested in making a layout for the community. I'm kind of busy for the next few weeks (classes, moving into a new apartment, etc.), so I'm not sure how soon I can get one made up. So, feel free to use someone else if you want something done relatively soon. If not, I'm your girl. =)
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 13th, 2006 09:01 pm (UTC)
Do you have any examples of layouts you've done?
Miss Jeckamissjecka on August 13th, 2006 10:47 pm (UTC)
My current layout (missjecka), zoom_it, northeastern, datinandrelatin, boogajwooga, elixir_vitae. I used to have more time to make layouts, and therefore more friends had layouts that I had designed... but once I got too busy, they went elsewhere for layouts. Heh.

Also, all of the ones I linked to above are using S1 overrides. (My journal is a permanent account, so I could make my own S1 style, but I got lazy and decided to just do standard, basic overrides.) Assuming this community stays as a basic account, S1 overrides will be what you'd need.

If you have any other questions, let me know!
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 27th, 2006 08:12 pm (UTC)
The community is a permanent account. Current style system is S2, which I intend to continue to use to maximize use of certain features. What I'm looking for is along the lines of what is proposed in this comment. Whatever S2 style decided upon, it will be tweaked/hacked/modified by kunzite1 and/or remark to add-to the style.
Mr. He Went That-A-Wayremark on August 11th, 2006 05:46 pm (UTC)
I can't design a layout, per se, because I lose at pretty. However, I'm totally willing to help code something that someone else designs, because coding is one of my strengths. My S2 skills are [almost] comparable to kunzite1's, and if he's willing to help, I'm sure we could hack up great things.
kunzitekunzite1 on August 11th, 2006 09:36 pm (UTC)
i'm with remark. if someone comes up with a design, i/we can hack it up.
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 13th, 2006 09:05 pm (UTC)
Sounds good, as I just said to remark. Two have volunteered to create a layout. If one or the both of them can come up with something, than you two can work your magic. :)
kunzitekunzite1 on August 13th, 2006 09:05 pm (UTC)
yay. :D

Sounds good. Two have volunteered to create a layout. If one or the both of them can come up with something, than you and k1 can definitely hack the hell out of it.
Guesslauren on August 11th, 2006 06:37 pm (UTC)
I'll try my hand at designing a layout I think, but as missjecka said, I might be a bit busy the next few weeks as I'm in a similar situation (moving to a new apartment, college classes, etc). Yeah. :D
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 13th, 2006 09:01 pm (UTC)
Do you have any examples of layouts you've done?
Guesslauren on August 14th, 2006 06:26 am (UTC)
I really don't have any samples, since most of the layouts I make are just little experiments, but I came up with a little demo one for this project, which is a free account using S2 Smooth Sailing. I'm going to be modifying it though since this community is a perm account & not a free one (some of the spacing is off & what not since I used CSS overrides for a lot of the positioning). I just don't have a community journal that's paid/perm to work with, so I made a demo using a free one & then I'm going to modify the free one using my personal account. Hopefully, it will transition well.

Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on August 27th, 2006 08:05 pm (UTC)
I'm definitely feeling that layout. :)

What modifications do you intend to make? I'm curious about the ideas you might have. What do you need from me to help you with this?
Guesslauren on August 27th, 2006 11:42 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't be making any HUGE changes, just tiny ones. For example, in that layout I used CSS to put the subject to the left of the date & hide those dashes, etc. With advanced customization, I can actually put the subject there instead of using CSS to put it there. The reason why I would do that is because in my browsers (Safari/Firefox for Mac) it doesn't look as good as it does on a Windows machine. CSS always has cross-browser issues, so actually moving things around would be better in that case.

Of course, if there's anything else you want me to do, I'd be happy to do it.

I really just need input, I think. For example, I'm not really crazy about the header right now-- just the text placement. I wasn't sure what to put there so I just kind of added some stuff. Or opinions about the colors. Things like that. And of course, I'll probably run into some S2 issues once I get further along with finishing the layout, but I'm sure that kunzite1 & remark can help me with anything I need.
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on September 17th, 2006 08:15 pm (UTC)
Well, I can't think of anything major to add. A few things that might be tweak-able, but...my brain's crazy pre-occupied.

Here's what we can do...we can make the layout you have the community layout, then take input from the entire community...ideas, suggestions for changes/tweaks, colors, whatever. Then you, k1/remark, and I can pick-and-choose among the ideas to reach final suggestions for changes. There'd be more flexibility to work with the layout (what with advanced customizations and whatnot) and the advantage of seeing/finding any issues/bugs or potentially getting better-quality input since there are existing posts/threads/tags/whatnot to explore and...whatever. Does that makes sense? Sorry if it doesn't...my brain's runnin' on fumes.

If you're up for that, let me know. Sorry about the delayed response -- work's kept me rather busy/(mentally)tired.
Guesslauren on September 17th, 2006 09:04 pm (UTC)
Sounds good to me. I'll start working on the custom layers and such. I'm not sure how long it will take me to finish since the semester just started up & what not. But your idea sounds good to me about letting the community vote, etc.
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on September 17th, 2006 09:13 pm (UTC)
Alright. Keep me updated on how things are going? (Lest I forget.) And if you want some paid time for that journal to help the process, let me know.
Guesslauren on September 17th, 2006 09:17 pm (UTC)
Will do. While I'd love the paid time, I don't really feel like it's necessary (plus, I'd feel guilty about spending other people's money!). I mean, if there really are things that are significantly different between the community vs. personal journal setting, I will be sure to let you know, but I think that the main issues are pretty straightforward.
