It seems they've listened to the hue and cry from the userbase :-)

Things fixed so far on the new update journal page seem to be:
- Font size has been increased again
- Autosizing to fit page width appears to have been fixed

Userpic still in a F-d-up location... :/

That appears to be on their "to do" list :-/

We always invite feedback -- doesn't mean we'll change things all the time, but we listen to feedback all the time. And I've always invited people to tell us when new stuff is broken (as it was with the autosizing thing) because then we can fix it. I'm hard-pressed to say that you had to twist our arm for us to fix those sorts of things, but that's the attitude you seem to be taking...
Artelaartela on December 15th, 2006 10:52 am (UTC)
Not at all. The attitude I'm taking is that you "upgraded" something with no warning and introduced bugs and lessened usibility while you were at it. I _expect_ these things to be fixed without arm twisting, but more importantly I expect the team to learn that there are better ways of doing releases (like thorough beta'ing which would have picked up the bugs and any strong dislikes from the userbase).

And they've put a grey box round the options at the bottom, which makes it look a bit nicer.

i'm not sure if you've spent anytime in the support community, but they really do spend their days trying to improve the site. i really think that more than 90% of the people that complain about livejournal have no idea about how much work people put into making this site better.

they were probably already working on the things you talked about.

people don't give them enough credit for the work they do. (and i'd say that 9/10 of them do it for free.)

after spending plenty of time a couple of years ago trying to help, i realized this. that's why i had no problem paying $150 for a perm account when it became available...

that said, my only complaint is that i think they need to make communities more secure. it's incredibly lame that you can't have one admin, and give other users mod status without also giving them the ability to takeover a community. it's time that that was addressed. other than that, i have no complaints.
kunzitekunzite1 on December 15th, 2006 12:57 pm (UTC)
i agree with the above idea of having more people out there testing these new thingies.

sure, you've got Support testing things and the Developers testing things. but there are other Power Users out there.

it's incredibly lame that you can't have one admin, and give other users mod status without also giving them the ability to takeover a community

different levels of maintainer status would be awesome. something like:
  1. full maintainer status
  2. edit community settings/membership
  3. edit info
  4. edit styles/layers</i>
  5. delete/screen/freeze entries/comments

I didn't experience any of these issues - or personally, perhaps, didn't have a problem with the smaller font size (in fact, I should admit to preferring it) - but it's good to know they've been noted and fixed :)

    Thanks for keeping us informed.

Autosizing to fit page width appears to have been fixed

The opposite is true for me, actually - the textarea (and the surrounding fluff) used to have full width, but now they don't anymore. :/ And they're still using a proportional font, too!

burr86 — any chance that the former will be fixed and the latter be made configurable, at least? I despise writing html with a proportional font. >.>

Other than that, let me repeat I'm not necessarily unhappy with the new page. I don't see it as a big improvement over the old one, and it's mildly annoying to have to get used to a new layout, but it's not a big deal, and the new one doesn't seem to be worse than the old one, either, so... :) Just mentioning this so it doesn't seem as if *everyone* hates the new page. Even though I still would've preferred to stay with the old one.

    Abe Hassanburr86 on December 15th, 2006 01:02 pm (UTC)
Tricky situation -- some people want it to stretch the full width, and some people hate reading lines that are 1440 pixels wide. *g* We made it max out at 900px, I think, as a compromise to keep it from getting too unwieldy. And we're seeing what we can do about the font. ;)

Some of the comments I've seen have been pretty ridiculous.

They also need to fix the "custom" security. You click "custom" and it doesn't list the filters for you to choose from.

Oh I thought it has been my eyes that the font seemed bigger now. It was a pain to read (and write!).
Good that the font is bigger again.

Being a developer on another site, I put full faith in the developers to do what's right. But I respect your disapproval with things that are going on.

The point of this comment is, would you mind not posting entries like this one and your previous one to this community? They're very biased against the LJ staff, and they seem to be against what I feel is the spirit of the community. Perhaps they'd be better suited in other communities for this sole purpose?

Those are very loaded terms! These two entries have not only been approved by the community moderators for posting but they've also generated a huge amount of discussion and debate around the issues. That volume of reply can only be generated if people are interested in the discsussion in the first place. What you appear to mean is that you don't like the discussion taking place.
