Your Say On Upcoming Changes
I notice it's been quiet here lately. It seems like everyone's been busy with real world issues (perhaps it's that time of the year), and that seems to reflect on activity on LJ. As you may be aware, LJ is set to have a permanent account sale starting 4 Dec. If you happen to run across any permanent account holders who aren't already with us, you may wish to let them know about our little corner in the LJ world, permmembers. :)

That being said, please take a moment to participate in a little poll, for this community.

Poll #1304508 Perm perm bo-berm, banana fana fo-ferm, mi my mo-merm...perm!

Thus far, this community has tried to limit the number of introduction posts to a specific meet-and-greet entry. The primary advantage is that no one's friends-page is flooded with entries; the primary disadvantage is that some may not go view this entry to check on new members (which may lead to less interaction within the community). So, that being said, would you like to:

allow introductory posts, in place of a centralized entry, or
53(21.4%)
keep introductions limited to one entry instead of allowing multiple introduction posts.
195(78.6%)

Entries currently posted go through a moderation queue, in an attempt to keep posts focused on relevant issues. The primary benefit to this is that we cut down on certain types of entries (such as those that can be addressed with a quick FAQ search); the flip-side is that I wonder if it might discourage posting. So, would you prefer to see:

moderated posting continue, with new entries requiring moderator review, or
178(71.8%)
un-moderated posting, allowing members to post entries without moderator review.
70(28.2%)

On another topic, I have been considering creating a LiveJournal wiki -- just like Wikipedia, this would be a user-created/edited collection of information, but specific to LiveJournal. Any bit of information about LJ-related issues would be included. The idea stems from my nerdy desire to have as much information as possible, including easily-located historical information. Is this something you would like to see (and preferably) participate in?

Yes
140(61.1%)
No
89(38.9%)

(And I know we all hate having yet another login and password, so I would attempt to use LJ's openID for this purpose.)

Lastly, we've lost a few moderators, so if you're interested in joining the permmembers moderation team -- with a primary focus on managing tags and memories, to start -- please let me know (if many are interested, it may be put to a vote).

Anyway, thanks for your input on the poll. If you have more detailed comments or thoughts, please feel free to post a comment. I understand the holidays are upon us, so I hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday season.

My...as always, a longer post than I originally intended!

Personally, I don't see much point to an introductory post....

This may be a silly question, but why aren't there any links to user info or members/friends of the community? If I want to view this community's info page, I have to go to my info page and click on the community name.
Yáng Yuǎn Zhìadudeabides on November 26th, 2008 07:19 am (UTC)
It's not a silly question. :) Links were there, and one day they disappeared. I think the moderator that was working on the design removed them with an intent to replace them with something different, and real life stuff came-up that distracted them from finishing.

When I have a bit more time, I'll rectify it.

I'm not that fussed one way or another about intro posts, but I do think the comm should allow unmoderated posts. I feel very strongly about that.

Huh, I figured there'd be ten people volunteering to mod by now. Since that's not the case, I'm up for it. I'm on LJ pretty frequently, reading my flist. I don't really have any LJ-specific qualifications, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Edit: Thanks for making me look stupid with a triple post, LJ. "Sorry, didn't work, Frank's nibbling on wires" my ass. *facepalm*

The thing is whats the point of an introductory page, especially when hardly any of the communities user base sees it?

You have to go to the specific page that they are all on. Now how many of 1208 members do that? If you are going to do introductory posts, then they shouldn't be centralized.

Honestly is there a need for an introductory page? This isn't an add me community is it?
Jessosyntheticjesso on November 26th, 2008 04:03 pm (UTC)
No, but a lot of people feel compelled to introduce themselves whenever they join a comm, instead of just jumping in and participating. I feel like an old fogey saying it, but man, kids these days always gotta feel special.

I personally don't give a damn who is in this community unless they have something interesting to say either in comments or in an on-topic top-level post.

I didn't answer the third question but the real answer is "eh, whatever".

I hate introductory posts because I really don't think it matters who is new and who is old, especially since the majority of permmembers should be familiar with the understood LJ netiquette. That being said, some people want to do them, so maybe one introductory post at the beginning or end of every perm sale.

I LOVE the idea of an LJ wiki. I'd totally participate in that. I especially like the historical information part, and I would appreciate a user written FAQ section.

as far as mod/unmodded posts, I think it helps to have modded posting, but sometimes it's frustrating in how LONG it takes. . .
Beowabbit: Geek: LiveJournalbeowabbit on November 26th, 2008 02:55 pm (UTC)
How about regular monthly or quarterly introduction posts? That way people would have the opportunity to comment on a new post relatively soon after they join, and people would see (and be reminded to check) an active introduction post every so often without having to bookmark a particular entry and remember long-term to go back and check it.

I say NO to the wiki, just because it's one more place to check! What's wrong with using this comm and the multiple lj_whatever communities that already exist?

I'm sure a lot of the historical stuff could either go in the profile or in an entry linked from the profile.
Über Geekwyntermoonwolf on November 26th, 2008 08:29 pm (UTC)
If a wiki is created, it should have the default homepage of how to use a lj-cut with detailed instructions with pictures.

ETA: Lots of pictures.
