Crazy Questions....
1. Is it possible for a Permanent member to purchase an add'l 100 icons on top of the max loyalty spots we already have? Yes, yes 300 sounds (and probably is) ridiculous, but I am curious as to the possibilities.

2. How, as permanent members, can we maintain or regain "financial pull", in order to have a say as to the goings on here, seeing as we technically no longer have to purchase anything?

Editing for clarification (I hope).

Question number two is a concern about being heard. Since we, as Permanent Members, have given all we "have" to give to stay, are we still heard when we make suggestions and/or objections? Do our suggestions have any weight to them?

This is not a complaint it is a question....

1. Its not possible at this time.
2. Go talk to your userrep kylecassidy as he is the one that can bring concerns to the advisory board.

Regarding (2), if you needed the financial pull then the non-permanent members would do it for you.

I like to say they have me right where they want me, but I say that just because it’s mildly humorous to treat privilege as if it were a disadvantage. :)

Privilege? More like working for a living, but I get your point. My concern, however, is not of the "I want it now, daddy!" variety, its more along the lines of do they still listen when we speak?

No, but this is primarily because they don't listen to anyone; you are no worse off as a Permament user than you would be as a Basic, Paid, or Plus.

That's a comforting thought! LOL

Money tends to be a corrupting motivation, anyway. For more than 20 years now there has been the free software movement that gave rise to LJ in the first place, and if they still have some of that spirit, then they’ll listen. Otherwise, it was good while it lasted. :)

Besides, it’s always possible to make a donation. :)

I agree, money does corrupt, but unfortunatly it still makes the world go around even when there is plenty of love and goodwill to go with it.

Edit: Typo

OTOH notorious murderer Hans Reiser, now serving a life sentence in prison, was a free software developer. I guess it’s more complicated than I realized. :)

1. No. Every so often you get increases in how many userpics you can get due to "loyalty", but you can't purchase add-ons (details here). There have been suggestions about something like that, and it seemed like LJ wanted to do it, but it all seems to have been derailed at least for now.
Kneesuh - Music's Mistress: LJ-Generalharmonatrix on January 1st, 2010 04:29 am (UTC)
Yeah, I am familiar w/ the loyalty system, I was just curious about adding extras.

Thanks. :)

No one group has "financial pull" with livejournal. You either pay for an account, get bare bones, or you allow ads. You love it, leave it or put up with it. Most people are not leaving.

Are we all a bunch of whiny fucks who think we deserve bigger/better because we paid for a lifetime membership?

No.

We're not.

We paid for a lifetime membership, not to be on the board of directors with more power than the next person. A lifetime membership means we don't have to pay $25 a year or however much it is now or will be, in the future. Nothing more.

Your voice is as large as the reason and people behind your voice. It has nothing to do with your account status.

What are you objecting to?
Kneesuh - Music's Mistress: LJharmonatrix on January 1st, 2010 05:42 am (UTC)
I'm not exactly sure whom you feel thinks they are better than who, but as I stated in my "clarification", I am not complaining. I am not objecting to anything - yet, nor am I suggesting anything - yet. My question arose from a conversation I had w/ a friend of mine a while back when I was considering the purchase of a permanent account. I was reminded of the conversation today (well yesterday at this point).

My friend disagreed w/ the purchase becuase he thought as a permanent member we would lose any "financial pull" we might have otherwise. Plus with the economic times as they are, and how quickly things have been moving (elsewhere on the web) it got me thinking about my "purchase" and what it might mean down the road...

Like I said they were questions not accusations.

The thing is, no one has financial pull here. We're all paying in one way or another, whether it be less features, ads, or cash. No one has a bigger say than the other, and frankly, we don't *have* that much of a say. If enough people bitch and moan, they might rethink some changes, but it's not all that likely.

That's what I'm trying to say. It doesn't matter if you're perm, paid, free, or ad-sharing. It's the majority, the loudest and most heard voices that count, because that's who's going to get the attention of media, and they're more focused on getting new members than keeping the ones they have. We're not here for the features as much as the connections we've made, right?

If we've had an account that we've used for more than a year, gotten very threaded into this community, we're not leaving. That's what they're counting on. They couldn't care less our "status".

Ok, fair enough. Thank you, this was the kind of discussion I was hoping for. :)

I know someone who allowed her account to downgrade to basic (I don't remember if it was w/ or without ads), then created a journal elsewhere that allows her to export the entries she chooses over here. She did it in protest to the whole fanfic mishap and a few other things that she felt were not right here. When I asked her why she didn't just leave she said because she had too many friends here.

In my mind her actions were completely useless, but she felt she was making a statement, so there you go.

We obviously don't have any financial pull, simply because we don't have any ongoing payments we could (threaten to) cancel, but LJ has repeatedly said that permanent members are considered Very Important™. :) Given that not every permanent member got their status by plonking down a heap of money (some got it as a reward etc., too), I'm inclined to believe that.
Kneesuh - Music's Mistress: LJharmonatrix on January 1st, 2010 03:16 pm (UTC)
I know they used to give out perm accounts to some of there more active and helpful volunteers, I wonder if they still do.

They still do.

1. I, of course, missed my typo and now that there is a response, I can't fix it. :(

For the record I meant "their".

2. I'm glad they have continued the practice. That's awesome! :)

I really wish we could purchase more user pics, I'd buy them in a heart beat. 300 most certainly does not sound ridiculous to me - it sounds wonderous :-(
Kneesuh - Music's Mistress: LJ-Generalharmonatrix on January 1st, 2010 05:01 pm (UTC)
It seems like a bit much, although I do have all 200 of my spaces full. :) I could see using about 25 to 30 more, especially if I wanted a single icon, per meaning/idea/emotion, instead of doubling or tripling up like I have on a few.

Of course, I'd probably still end up taking advantage of the offer if it and the extra funds were available! :D
Nikki: NH New Year (Fireworks)nakeisha on January 2nd, 2010 03:22 pm (UTC)
I'm certain I could easily fill another 100 slots :-)

I know it seems a lot but I love my icons *g*
