I wasn't sure where else to ask this question...

Does anyone know how to set it up so that Facebook automatically posts a link to my public LJ entires on my wall?
~ Dawna ~dawna on February 23rd, 2010 06:07 am (UTC)

basically, enable it in the privacy tab, then be logged in to both fb and lj when you post your entry, a popup will come up to sync your fb account. It will need to be public when it posts or it wont be sent there so make sure your default posting setting is set to public.

Odd, I browsed the FAQ and didn't even see that... Ok, so I got that to work, but now I'm wondering how I can get it to work if I post through my client (semagic). Will it only work through web-posting?
~ Dawna ~dawna on February 23rd, 2010 06:44 am (UTC)
That I dont know, about semagic.

Only works through web posting. There's javascript on update.bml that works with Facebook to check your login cookie (so that it knows which account to post to).

Browser limits?
I don't know about anyone else, but I've found that it only _seems_ to do it with IE, and not with Opera. Not entirely sure about Firefox either.
It also doesn't even ask you about 'friends only' posts, but I guess I can cope with that.

Re: Browser limits?
It works for me in Firefox. Haven't tried Opera because I don't have it installed.

Yeah I think the Friends Only thing is intentional because your LJ friends list is different from your Facebook friends list, but I'm not entirely sure on the specifics.

Re: Browser limits?
Yeah, I'd assumed as much. I just ... well, have a lot of overlap in the two friends groups, so there's been a few occasions where I'd have appreciated the option.
Then again, copying the link isn't exactly a hardship, so I'm not worried about it.
I guess that's another one that's pushing me towards switching over to Firefox. (I guess I would still appreciate a 'link this post to (Facebook|Twitter|Buzz) sort of button though)

Re: Browser limits?
Ordinarily I'd suggest that you run that idea over to suggestions, but I can't recall off the top of my head whether anything like that has come through in the last three years, or whether the vaguely similar suggestion in the moderation queue (out of a couple handfuls of suggestions in there) substantially duplicates it.

If you catch me when I'm not fuzzybrained (not nearly 2am local time, in other words), I may be able to dig through past entries (it would be under the tag "external services" if it's anywhere), and I *have* to spend some quality time with the queue, and let you know either whether it's worth writing up as a proposal or link you to an existing discussion.

Re: Browser limits?
Buttons make everything easier. That's why I use the semagic client to post... heh. I'm not so good with things like html.

Re: Browser limits?
I shall take a look at that. I'd really appreciate a 'spam people on $other_social_network with my post' button :)

Re: Browser limits?
This suggestion is out of the moderation queue now; if it was what you were looking for, you are welcome to join in the discussion: http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/995990.html

If not, you're welcome to leave a suggestion (instructions in the community profile) that's more what you're looking for.

There's also some interesting-looking stuff in changelog, though one always must consider that it may not actually be released any time soon and the code in changelog may not be the final format.

Re: Browser limits?
Checked it - definitely doesn't work in Opera, but it seems to work fine in both IE/Firefox with - as far as I can tell - similar configurations.
*shrug*. Maybe that's my prod to move over to firefox :)

Heather Joneszerocoolphreak on February 23rd, 2010 06:55 am (UTC)
I guess I just prefer not asking LJ support...

If you consider that most of the people who end up answering questions here are Support volunteers anyway (including all three people who've replied to this post at the moment), there's not really much difference except that over there you're guaranteed to get an answer.

Go through Facebook, not LJ

It's in the Notes tab. Somewhere in there, you enter your blog web address and whenever it updates, Facebook posts it. Since you never give FB your LJ password, it only works for public entries
adjectivemarcus on February 23rd, 2010 01:22 pm (UTC)
Yes, this is how I've done it - it's basically using your LJ's feed for public posts. Much simpler than the thread above - set it up and forget about it!
Heather Joneszerocoolphreak on February 23rd, 2010 08:39 pm (UTC)
Not simpler at all... I can't figure out how to do that. I see no place to enter a blog address...
Billhelmbillhelm on February 24th, 2010 05:49 pm (UTC)
Go to Facebook.

Click on your name in upper left, it'll bring you to the page with just your updates.

top right there's a magnifying glass icon with options next to it. It's at the top of your updates. Click on that.

Click Settings

Click Blog/RSS

paste this into public URL - http://zerocoolphreak.livejournal.com/data/rss

Click import.

That should pull all your public posts over regardless of what client you use.
Heather Joneszerocoolphreak on February 24th, 2010 10:33 pm (UTC)
Oh awesome! Thank you! Facebook is just confusing to me I guess...
Billhelmbillhelm on February 25th, 2010 12:43 am (UTC)
It has a really terrible interface for this kind of stuff.
