Changes To User Information Page
I'm following up on posts that have been made concerning changes to the user information page, so I hope this post is okay.

It seems to have generated an awful lot of bad feeling, more so than you'd think a single change would make. But I fear the one thing is the proverbial straw that broke the camels back as far as paying customers are concerned.

If you wish to make a comment on the new design you can do so here.

A poll is also being run about it. Currently it shows that 1,703 people don't like it and 124 do.

Apparently there will now be an option to turn the new layout off (although a considerably number of people I've seen commenting have suggested that it's the other way round, we opt-in, not out).

A petition that also lists the other changes that have been foisted on folk, probably without anyone being aware of it has also been created.

I think that petition is interesting but isn't gonna do much in the end because of this!

I can't say that I (and most people are saying the same) believe it will do that much good. But OTOH, I think it's important to at least register dislike, or indeed positive comments.

Having said that, it does appear that the negative comments from the first showing of it did at least get them to go for a you can turn it off option, so...

I can put up with them making retarded changes to the site...just make it optional and make it so that I can bypass them completely when signed in.

If not...prepare to get your ass beat, SA.
Nikki: NH Mysticnakeisha on June 19th, 2006 10:53 am (UTC)
I admit that optional was the best that a lot of folk, me included, wanted, could hope for. So that's good.

The fact that people are actually worrying about this makes me think that a lot of LJ users have WAY too much time on their hands. Functionally it does the same job as the old page, it just looks a little different and will need some people to amend their user info to fit the format if they don't make the trivial effort to opt out. I look at my user info maybe once every couple of weeks, when I can't remember someone's name or something - it just isn't that big a deal.
Nikki: NH Flowers 1 (White and pink)nakeisha on June 19th, 2006 10:53 am (UTC)
It's a bit deal to some people.

But it's more than this one thing, that's clear from comments and posts flying around the place. It's the whole 'this is what you are getting, we don't care about our customers' feeling that it's bringing, which is a shame.

What's different about the user info page. I just looked at mine.
Nothing seems different.

This neverending griping about 'myspace cloneage' is starting to get to me.
What sucks about myspace is not the organization of information on profile pages. That is almost understandable/navigatable ...

The sucky part is the constant stream of ads, stupid flash music videos, completely unorganized structure known as their main page/administrative area. You don't know where to go to search for someone, and when you do find it, it's so dang obscure it's not even funny. Most of the links on bulletins or blogs all open in new windows without asking ...

A simple reorganization on livejournal from a big list to a little more compacted table .. isn't 'going myspace'. Seriously, if the only thing people associate with myspace is a columned table layout ... they obviously haven't been friend-requested by an army of bimbo-whores like the rest of us.

Sigh.
Dragon -V-: spockdragonvpm on June 19th, 2006 02:45 pm (UTC)
I don't see why they don't just bite the bullet and make the userinfo page part of the individual styles. It seems fairly stupid to put so much effort into re-tooling the userinfo page into "something else that doesn't match the rest of my journal" especially since it seems fairly obvious that it should be possible to take the content from a userinfo page and shuffle it around the way you can with an individual post or your friends page etc... (and there are enough random people who like making styles that it wouldn't take all that long to have corresponding userinfo pages for all the S2 styles out there).

Honestly, I don't think the new userinfo page is all that bad. Sure does get rid of a lot of the wasted white space. Layout is a little counter-intuitive (IMHO) in a couple spots, but mostly it's fine.

Like it or not, LJ, as a public internet blog site, has to change and update with the times to some degree if it wants to continue attracting clients. It's simply a good business decision. Stagnation = death. As much as I hate MySpace, it is the biggest contender...and the demographic that's hip to MySpace is the one LJ needs to attract. I mean, damn, 17-20 year olds make up 1.6 million accounts, and with only 1.8 million accounts considered "active in some way", well, the numbers scream pretty loudly.

Frankly, as long as there is an option to use it or not, why is anyone freaking out? If one doesn't like it, one can not use it. Whether it's "opt-in" or "opt-out", who gives a rat's ass, you can still turn it of one way or the other. Once again, people are so up in arms that they might have to turn it off instead of others having to turn it on; man, get some perspective. One, "old users" are a minority, and two, you get what you want in the end, so what's the problem?

I'm not technically inclined, or do I know any code, but the only way anybody is affected by the new layouts, from what I see, is if they have a bunch of extraneous crap in their user infos. What a big ado about nothing -- IMO.
Nikki: NH Flowers 3 (Dreaming of Winter)nakeisha on June 19th, 2006 04:14 pm (UTC)
Extraneous to you, maybe. Not to the folk who have them.

But it isn't only those who don't like it. Even folk who have done nothing to their page don't like it.

And you get a Comm with a lot of members, nothing extra and it looks dreadful.

So, sorry. Not a fuss about nothing - not to some folk.

The part that bugged me the most was the confirmation that SixApart is trying to "spin off" the "older users" to VOX.
Um... hello? Some of us "older users" have permanent accounts here... gonna transfer those over there for us?

Besides - the folks on my FL range in age from 16 to 50-something... I enjoy the diversity.

doesn't mean that they're actually going to do something about it.

True!

One of the LJ people (calls herself an Intern) has got involved. She's answered a few posts and promises that all comments are being read and that they will be listened to. Again, no promise anything will be done. But she has said LJ would be stilly to ignore such an outcry.
